What are multi gas detectors?

Multi gas detectors are devices that can detect several different types of gas such as flammable gases, low levels of oxygen and a range of other harmful gases. They are used more as a preventative measure for health and safety reasons, these are typically wall mounted ones but there are also portable multi gas detectors too.

How do multi gas detectors work?

The technology behind gas detectors vary depending on the type of gas they are designed to detect. To begin, gases are divided into toxic or combustible gases, where then falls into four different methods to be employed for detection; catalytic sensor, infrared sensors, electrochemical and metal oxide semiconductor technologies.

For measuring combustible gases

Catalytic sensors

Catalytic sensors are the most common type of sensors used to detect combustible gases in gas detectors. This is because their design is relatively straightforward; using, a typically, platinum treated wire coil. When combustible gas touches the catalytic surface it will oxidise and affect the resistance of the wire due to the heat. By measuring the heat you can calculate the amount of combustible gas present.  

Infrared sensors

Infrared sensors work by employing a light between the emitter side and the receiver side. When combustible gas, containing hydrocarbon molecules, enters this chamber, it will disrupt the light transmission and depending on the amount of disruption the device can calculate the type of gas present.

Electrochemical cells

Electrochemical cells are typically used to detect toxic gases like carbon monoxide, chlorine and nitrogen oxides. When a toxic gas is present the electrical signals will send an alert via electrical currents.  

Metal Oxide Semiconductors or MOS

Metal Oxide Semiconductors, or MOS, are typically used to detect toxic gases like carbon monoxide. They operate via a gas sensitive film that is composed of tin or tungsten oxides. The film will have a reaction when a gas is present, triggering the device. Generally, metal oxide sensors are considered efficient due to their ability to operate in low-humidity ranges.
